Job Summary

Plans, directs, oversees, and coordinates nutrition services in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, Child Care Food Program, and Michigan Child Care Licensing Rules; Provides training, support, consultation, and technical assistance to staff and parents related to child nutrition, food safety, food handling, meal service, and special dietary needs; Supervises assigned staff; Develops policies and procedures for food and nutrition services.

The National Office of Head Start mandates that staff be fully vaccinated or have an approved vaccine exemption request approved and on file prior to hire date.

Staff hired after 5/1/2022 qualify for a sign on bonus up to $2,000



Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist


Preferred knowledge/experience in early childhood nutrition

Preferred knowledge/experience in food safety/sanitation (or ServSafe certified)

Preferred knowledge/experience in the CACFP (Child Care Food Program)

Preferred knowledge/experience in working with diverse low-income families.

Position Duties/Responsibilities

Directs and coordinates food and nutrition services for CACS Head Start.

Establishes and maintains vended meals contracts. Coordinates compliance with provisions of annual CACFP agreement and triennial reviews.

Provides staff training in nutrition, CACFP, food safety/sanitation, and early childhood feeding.

Plans monthly breakfast and snack menus that comply with CACFP requirements and Head Start Performance Standards and writes accompanying purchase orders.

Visits classrooms two-three times per year to conduct CACFP monitoring reviews, Nutrition monitoring reviews, and Height/weight screening on children with nutritionally 'at risk' BMI.

Consults with families who have nutritional concerns regarding their child's growth, eating habits, food allergies, or other special dietary needs.

Follows-up with parents and health care providers to address nutrition-related health concerns that have been identified.

Supervises the Nutrition Services Aide, Nutritionist, and EHS-CCP Nutritionist, ensuring responsibilities are carried out efficiently, competently, and professionally.

Writes nutrition policies and procedures for the Program Manual.

Provides nutrition article for the monthly Parent Connections newsletter.

Posts monthly menus/recipes and other helpful food and nutrition resources on agency website.

Seeks to expand and enrich nutrition education resources for use in classrooms.

Monitors food expenditures to help identify problem areas.

Duties/Responsibilities of all Head Start Staff

Follow all Head Start Performance Standards, Michigan Child Care Licensing Regulations, and all other federal, state, and local regulations.

Adhere to CACS Personnel Policies and Procedures and Mission Statement

Communicate clearly and accurately when writing and speaking. Maintain professional confidentiality.

Share information with the administrative team, supervisor, and/or support staff regarding areas of success and/or concern.

Participate in meetings to provide input regarding special and to assist in developing plans to meet those needs.

Attend all required meetings, conferences, trainings, etc.

Participate in Program Quality Assurance and Self-Assessment efforts.

Work openly and cooperatively in a team effort approach. Work at any site with any staff. Contribute ideas and efforts towards common goals. Help build and maintain positive attitude, trust, and team spirit.

Personal appearance must be neat and appropriate.

Physical Requirements

Properly stoop, bend, lift, climb stairs, and expend moderate physical exertion.

Always interact with children in an appropriate and safe manner.

Follow universal safety precautions.
